The County maintains and operates its own lakes. Wiest Lake, located outside of Brawley, and Sunbeam Lake (photo) are two examples of lakes that allow fishing, water skiing, personal watercraft and swimming.
These lakes are supplied with water that comes from the Colorado River via the Imperial Irrigation District's canal system. These lakes become very popular in the summer months, as the locals enjoy themselves by swimming in the cool water and using the grassy parks and large shade trees. The lakes are especially nice in the evenings because you can better observe the spectacular sunsets that are typical in the Imperial Valley.
Birdwatchers can observe a variety of waterfowl that live around these lakes. Many species reside around these lakes.
