Throughout the county there are old structures used by the earliest of American settlers. These adobe structures were stage stops for the old Butterfield line that crossed the Imperial Valley from Yuma to the mountains. Another stage stop can be found on Highway S2 north of Ocotillo.
This photo shows what is left of the stage stop located on Old Highway 80 just west of Winterhaven. Take the Algodones exit and head east about one mile. This stage stop lies just above a marsh that is part of the Colorado River delta.
